Year 3 ZooSnooze Camp – Part 2: Education lessons at the Zoo

DSC00895 DSC00897On Tuesday week 9 All the year 3s went to the Zoo for camp. This was the first school camp that the year 3s had been on. When the year 3s got to the Zoo we put our luggage in a room with all animal skins on the walls, and the saddest part for Emily, there was a real elephants leg as a stool! After we put our bags away we went to a lesson about Tigers. The person telling us about Tigers was a women called Angela.

She talked about why Tigers are endangered. One of the reasons why Tigers are endangered is that people are killing them for their skin. What people are doing to help tigers is donating to a foundation and starting breeding programs at Zoos. I think people should help Tigers instead of being against them.

On Tuesday we went  to the year 3 ZooSnooze Camp. We went on a bus and  it took about 45 minutes. When we got to the zoo we put our bags in a room and then we had lunch. After lunch we learnt about Tigers. Did you know that in the wild the Chinese tiger is extinct? After this we saw a tiger having lunch and his name was Tuan.

Woodhouse Camp: Rope Bridges by Oscar and Lachlan

On camp we did rope bridge. We split into 2 groups. One of the groups was with Mr. Baldock and the other with Miss Verrusio. First we had to try and make a line across the imaginary boat. Then we had to make a ‘spider web’ with ropes.

We used 11 ropes to make the spider web. We used a blue rope at the top. Then in the middle we used a brown rope. I liked this activity, because we had help from Al, the instructor. Then we had to sit on the spider web. It was a success, because we could balance all of our weight onto the spider web.

Woodhouse Camp: Brilliant Birthdays

On Tuesday it wasn’t only camp it was also a very exciting day for Niamh and Charlotte P……..  IT WAS THEIR BIRTHDAYS!!!  Having a birthday at camp was  pretty special, because they not only got attention from family and friends, they also got attention from lots of our camp instructors.  Some of the special things the Birthday girls both got were tasty birthday cakes (there were two cakes, because there were two birthday girls) and yummy ice cream sundaes. There was a big birthday song for the birthday girls.

I had never been to such an exciting birthday ( it was more like a massive party really).  Even though it was not my birthday I still enjoyed all the excitement, but as for Charlotte and Niamh they thought it was the best 9th birthday anyone could ever have.  I also agreed that it was a brilliant birthday.

Woodhouse Camp: Challenge Hill

When we went to Challenge Hill we split up into two teams. One team had Mr .Baldock and the other had Miss Verrusio. The two main obstacles were the Mouse Trap and the Big Dipper Slide. Inside the Mouse Trap, it wasn’t that dark.

The Big Dipper Slide wasn’t really that fast. It was straight and a curve at the end. A few other activities were the ‘Chimney’ and the Commando. We thought that Challenge Hill was great!

Woodhouse Camp: Brilliant Breakfast

Okay lets foucus on breakfast. For breakfast we had a choice of cereal or pancakes. Natalija had pancakes with cream, strawberries and chocolate drops. Jazz had pancakes with strawberries and chocolate drops. Our pancakes were yummy. Natalija also had cereal, but Jazz didn’t want to have any cereal.

Lots of people took a long time to finish their breakfast, some people even had 3 serves. Then after everyone had finished we all had to wash our own plates or bowls, and cutlery. We had a great breakfast.

Woodhouse Camp: Worm Farms

On camp we did worm farming. Verity found a huge worm about 15 cm long. I found no worms and I got shocked, because there was a yellow box with a thousand worms in it. I got to have 4 worms in each layer, so I got 8 worms all together. We had so much fun making friends with the worms. :p

The worms were SO GROSS at first but when Verity and I put the worms in the bottles they weren’t so gross anymore. We put soil first, then hay, then more soil, then a tiny bit of hay up to the top and finally tomato, lettuce and strawberries. Verity put an apple core in her worm farm.

We had a good day. 😀 😛

Woodhouse Camp: Free Time

Well a lot of things happend in free time, Brooke got duck poo on her by a flock of ducks that flew by, Elissa went to hospital and both of us fell down a pile of grass just to name a few. On the first day, free time took place near the bunk house and on the second day it took place around the volleyball court. Free time was really fun, because we got to choose from a range of different sports equipment, like soccer balls and Frisbees. Sometimes we would have free time if we had finished eating early, but we didn’t have much time to. During free time we both used cricket stumps as walking sticks and rowing paddles, it was so funny. Now comes Elissa, she went to hospital, because she had something in one eye,  she couldn’t  watch T.V. or read for two days. Now the funny part was Brooke. She got pooed on by a duck flying by. Now us two, we were just walking along when we didn’t realise that a pile of grass was in front of us, and we fell over it. Rosie’s opinon: I think if I had to rate free time I would give it 7 1/2 rubber chickens with a side order of chicks! Bethany’s opinon: I think free time was absolutely fantastic, and I would give it 8 rubber chickens with no side order.

Year 3 Woodhouse Camp

The Year 3s had a fantastic time on their first school camp to Woodhouse on Monday and Tuesday this week. The weather was brilliant and the students got to experience a wide variety of activities. The students had the opportunity to do some problem solving games, rope bridge making, pond study in the onsite wetlands, a night walk, mini quiz night, billy cart racing, worm farm making and explore Challenge Hill. Everyone had a great time and enjoyed all the new experiences.

A big thank you to our parent helpers Bec Smailes and Margot Way. We really appreciated their enthusiasm and assistance throughout our camp. A special thank you to Miss Verrusio for joining us on camp and assisting Mr Baldock. We would also like to thank our instructors from Wilderness Escape, Moira and Al and their work experience person Cherry for all their preparation and running really engaging activities. Above you will find several blog posts created by the students on certain aspects of our camp experience. We hope you enjoy our reports and a slide show below of all the photos from our camp.

Year 3 Woodhouse Camp

The Year 3s from both Mr Baldock and Miss Verrusio’s classes recently went on a camp to Woodhouse. It was a one night two day camp. We stayed in the ‘Bunkhouse’. We had two great camp leaders in Marc and Michelle from Wilderness Escape who organised and ran the activities for us while on camp. We also had some great parent helpers in Donna, Jacqui, Sue, and Tanya.

This was the year 3s first experience of a school camp and for some their first camp experience. Please find below some photos and slide shows of some of the activities the student’s took part in.

Warm Up Activities

After taking all our gear off the bus we had recess. Straight after that Marc and Michelle introduced themselves and went through the rules while we were on camp. After that the students participated in a few warm up games (pictured below).

Billy Cart Construction / Racing:

Our first activity was billy cart construction and racing. Due to the rain Marc had organised for us to construct our billy carts under cover. Marc demonstrated to the students what the procedure was to construct the Billy Carts. He taught the students the correct names for each of the parts. Then the students were arranged into groups, to construct their billy carts. After the carts were constructed and they passed the inspection by Marc they were ready to race. Each team had to assemble on the track next to a tyre. After each lap, each team had to pit stop and change their role in the team. After each team had completed their laps they had to stand in a line quietly to be in the running to win. Below is a slide show of all the action.

Rope bridge construction:

For our second activity we had to go to the Pine Forest to meet up with Michelle. Michelle showed us how to make a spider web rope bridge between three close trees. After Michelle’s demonstration we divided into groups and then set about constructing our own rope bridges. We were given a time limit and a pretend scenario that a flood was coming and this was one way to save ourselves. Below is a slide show of our rope bridges.

Nature Treasure Hunt:

We went on a nature treasure hunt with Michelle. We divided into teams and we then had to set about finding the items on our lists. It was great fun. Below is just a few photos of our treasure hunt.

Talent Night:

The students had a great time presenting their talents at our talent night. Our parent judges did a fantastic job at coming up with great comments and feedback for our performers. Congratulations to Piper and Bernie for coming first with their dance routine, Sophie and Georgia for coming second with their comedy routine and Caitlin for coming in third place with her dance routine. Photos of this event will be coming soon.

Camp fire cooking:

On the second day Marc showed us how to make damper. We could include all sorts of extra ingredients in our damper such as chocolate, sultanas and marshmallows. Some of the students chose to make their damper and cover it in alfoil, while others chose to roll the damper around a stick. Once the students had completed this it was time to cook it in the camp fire. Marc instructed us on how to cook safely on a camp fire. When it was ready the students were really pleased with the results. Below is a slide show of our cooking efforts.

Environmental Water Study:

Our next activity was going on an environmental water study with Michelle. She gave us a very informative talk about the local creek environment. We then were given the opportunity to explore the creek with nets and buckets to see what water creatures we could find. Some of us almost ended up as water creatures! Below is a slideshow of our water explorations.

Challenge Hill:

Our last activity was to take on Challenge Hill. Due to all the rain we were restricted as to what equipment we could have a go on, but we had a lot of fun anyway. Below is a slide show of a few photos. There will be more to come soon.

Thank you:

I would like to say a big thank you to Marc and Michelle from Wilderness Escape for running such a fantastic camp for us. I would also like to thank our parent helpers Donna, Jacqui, Sue, and Tanya for all their help and support and a thank you to Miss Verrusio for all her efforts while on camp. Both Miss Verrusio and I were very happy with the efforts of the students. It was great to see them working so cooperatively together while experiencing new activities and having a lot of fun.
